Sunday Afternoon
Dear Mom:
I suppose Tom told you all the news but then we have our own opinoins on things so he probably left out something. I doubt if Tom and George will be able to get back to school for several day because of the snow which has drifted. The radio was warning the people to stay of the highways last night. Yesterday all the trains and buses did not operate. By buses I mean city to city lines. I think the transportation is still tied up today. I hope Tom doesn’t try to come back until he is certain it is safe. It was 12 degrees below this morning but has warmed up somewhat. Yesterday moring was certainly winter at its bes. It snowed hard part of the morning and a strong wind was blowing all day.
I suppose Tom stayed in Burlington Friday and I have been wondering if he was able to get home Saturday through the blizzard.
No doubt you got my grade card. When comparing them with some of the other fellow’s grades, I was well pleased. Of course, I’m not taking an extremely hard course. I was lucky in my Biology Exam and got 88. It was a pretty stiff exam. Fr. Meinberg told me I wrote nearly a “B” paper in History and said that if I had worked hard all year instead of just the last few weeks he would have given me a “B”. Maybe I’ll make it next quarter. I don’t know how I happened to get a “B” in English but I’m not going

to kick. I won’t say anything about Tom’s fine grades; there just taken for granted.
My job as waiter has undergone a change. For some unknown but thankful reason I am now waiting in the refectory where the juniors and seniors eat. I like it much better as it doesn’t take so much time and it’s more fun being with the students. However I’m thankful for my other job which enabled me to know the priests.
Fr. Takkenberg’s funeral at the cathedral was certain handled nicely. The bishop said mass before a filled church, including about fifty priests. The mass as well as the sermon given by Msgr. Cone was broadcasted. I’m enclosing a clipping from the Davenport paper about his death.
Friday afternoon I saw one of the best shows I have ever seen. It was a musical romance by the name of “Rose Marie” and starring Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy. The singing, which was of the opera type was extremely good. The setting was the Canadian mountains. There was also a short three dimension picture for which the audience had to use Audioscopes.
You remember the apples I brought up last week? Well, I’ve eaten just three so please don’t send any more for a while. The fellows in the other room of our suite are moving out Monday. Most of the candy and dates were still left when I came back. They were very good.
I sent off the Yellowstone Park application yesterday and included two references, Uncle Pax and Fr. Meinberg. I don’t think I have a ghost of a chance. I’m not so hot about the job anyway as I would be with older folks all the time and then, I don’t want to be too far away from home.
Love
Charles
